Create Your Own HTML Templates

The specifications for creating your own HTML templates that can be used as a Mail Magic Professional Wizard template are set out below. A basic knowledge of HTML is required.
This information is provided for your reference only, and Infinisys Ltd. provides no guarantees that HTML templates created following these guidelines will be usable with Mail Magic.

Mail Magic Professional's HTML template wizards allow users to freely insert text, backgrounds and graphics into previously created HTML files, through the use of special custom tags in the HTML code. Using the wizard you can also allow fields from the database to be automatically merged into your own original HTML mails.

Mail Magic Professional's HTML Display Function

Mail Magic Professional utilizes third party HTML engines to display HTML mails. The Windows version uses MicroSoft Internet Explorer's HTML rendering engine. There are differences in how these two engines interpret some types of HTML code. Please refer to the specifications provided by the developers.

Files Required to Create a Template

  • HTML File
(An HTML file that contains the instructions for the template. Must be named "index.html".)
  • Graphic File(s)
(Required when graphics are used in the template.)
  • Background File
(Required when a background graphic is used in the template)
  • Preview Files
(Thumbnail views of the template that are displayed by the wizard)

Custom Tag Specifications

Mail Magic Professional's custom tags are used before and after the HTML tags used for the text, graphics and backgrounds that can be inserted when using the template wizard.

eg : <!xxxx="Comment">Text, graphic or background tag<!xxxx-end>

The "!xxxx" above stands for the different special Mail Magic Professional wizard tags such as "!back", "!string" and "!image". See below for details regarding these different tags.

The "Comment" text above is the text used to tell the user of the wizard what they should do eg "Please select a graphic" or "Please input your text" etc. You use whatever text you wish in place of "Comment".

Tag for Inserting Backgrounds <!back>

<!back="Comment"><body bgcolor="#ffffff" background="xxx.gif"><!back-end>

This tag should be used when you want the user of the wizard to be able to select different graphics to use as the background.

Be sure to use the "bgcolor" and "background" attributes and specify either a color value or name, and a graphic file name. The graphic file specified by "xxx.gif" will be the default and must in the same folder as the index.html file.

Tag for Inserting Text <!string>

<!string="Comment">Text<!string-end>

Use this tag when you want the wizard user to be able enter text into the HTML mail.
The text indicated by "Text" above is displayed in the template preview when the template is selected, and thus is the default text. You can use any text you want for "Text". Text entered by the wizard user will replace the default text in the HTML mail.

Tag for Inserting Graphics <!image>

<!image="Comment"><img src="xxx.gif" width="xxx" height="xxx"><!image-end>

Use this tag when you want the wizard user to be able to select a graphic to use in the HTML mail.
The graphic specified by "xxx.gif" is displayed in the template preview when the template is selected, and thus is the default graphic. It must in the same folder as the index.html file. You can use any grapic you want for "xxx.gif". The graphic selected by the wizard user will replace this graphic in the HTML mail.
The width and height sizes are the pixel sizes of the default graphic. The graphic selected by the wizard user will be displayed at the same size as the default graphic.

Preview Specifications

The previews are used to visually present the item being edited to the user. Previews are not absolutely necessary. If no preview files are available the preview display area will remain blank.

Previews are displayed in the top left corner of the template wizard. The number of previews needed is equal to the number of elements in the template that can be edited by the user.

The editable elements are presented to the user by the wizard in the order in which they appear in the HTML code.

Preview specifications are as follows:

  • Graphic size : Width 128 pixels X Height 128 pixels
  • File Format : JPEG
  • File Name : 01.jpg, 02.jpg .... in the order in which they are used by the wizard.
